An initiative on the November ballot in Idaho is drawing more television advertising that I can remember for any issue in the past thirty years. One side wants to eliminate the restrictive abortion law enacted in Idaho after the Supreme Court overturned the Roe decision; the other side wants the restrictive law to remain. I fail to understand the reasoning behind government restrictions on medical care for pregnant women when other medical care is entrusted to the patient and the physician. The Idaho law represents State enforcement of a religious belief in a nation where religious beliefs and practices are supposed to be free from government interference. The necessity of abortion to protect the physical or mental health of a woman should be a personal decision after consultation with a medical professional. Questions of faith should be addressed by the persons involved without interference from the government. If one’s religious beliefs prohibit an abortion then she should act accordingly. Keep the government out of the bedroom and the hospital bed.
